I’m completely obsessed with Acryla Gouache, which is a matte, flat paint medium that will cover dark paper beautifully.

I use the Holbein brand, but there are a few others that are amazing as well. In the first video, I describe what the heck gouache actually IS, and how to pronounce it, and in the second one you can watch a gallery of my abstract gouache work!

Gouache Cheat Sheet

  • It’s matte (not shiny)

  • It is water soluble

  • It is beautifully opaque

  • It works great on dark paper

  • Acryla gouache is fixed when it dries (it cannot be lifted by water)

  • Traditional gouache will NOT be fixed when it’s dry (can be lifted with water)

  • Many artists use gouache and watercolor together
