I live and work in Minneapolis. I grew up in northern Minnesota on the north shore of Lake Superior with wood heat and an outhouse. I’ve traveled a lot and believe that the things I’ve seen in my life get into my art in strong ways, especially a sense of aerial topography. I have an obsessive relationship with Hamlet. I don’t like to do anything before noon. I like the color white, the liturgy, and post-modernism. I like movies but not television. I have four stuffed blowfish. I have too many National Geographics. I don’t have pets but plants are okay because it’s not that bad if they die. Once I told someone that I spent a lot of time in the studio and she said “Oh, that must be relaxing!” That’s cute, but no. It’s not particularly relaxing. It’s necessary in a kind of life and death way, but not “relaxing”.
